Hyattsville Dog Training Club’s history begins back in 1950.  Cal Pearson, with considerable dog training experience, started the Canine Training Association (CTA).  The early obedience classes were held in Hyattsville, MD at MacGruder Park.  Within a few years, other branches of CTA were formed – Bethesda and Rockville, MD and in Alexandria and Arlington, VA.

With the growing interest in obedience training and trials, Cal and early members of CTA applied to the American Kennel Club to become a sanctioned club to enable the hosting of obedience trials.  The initial request was denied because the territory was too large.   A new club covering a more localized territory was formed – Hyattsville Dog Training Club held its first trial in 1956 and continues to do so today.  Hyattsville Dog Training club became its own entity in 1960 but serves as a sister organization to its founder – CTA.

Hyattsville Dog Training Club has grown steadily over the years – in addition to obedience and rally trials held in the CTA Beltsville facility, HDTC sponsors tracking and tracking excellent tests.  In more recent years, AKC sanctioned agility trials have been added to the ever-growing calendar.
